History of the Rogue Valley

The discovery of gold brought pioneers to the Rogue Valley during the 1850s, but it was agriculture that prompted settlement in the area. As agriculture grew as an industry during the late 19th century, so did the need for irrigated water to supplement rainfall. In the early-mid 20th century, the federal government commissioned studies of the water supply needs in the region and local irrigation districts were formed to formally manage the distribution of water for agricultural purposes. Irrigation needs continue to grow in the Valley, but the aging water supply infrastructure has not kept up with the demand. The WISE Project will address how to improve water management in the Rogue Valley, as well as improvements to water quality and quantity for native anadromous fish and the raw water supply for municipal treatment and distribution.
